Mark Sun Roz

Within Reach

28 July - 13 August 2022

M/Gallery presents “WITHIN REACH” solo exhibition with Latvian contemporary artist Mark Sun Roz. The show will be on view from 28th July until 13th August 2022 and will feature 10 new original artworks.

Combining the hyper-contemporary characters and symbols with the ancient Greek backgrounds, half of the collection focuses on the objects that combine different references and styles, confidently connecting in a single harmony - SpongeBob Squarepants offers an NFT to an Ancient Greek warrior, an anime girl floats in the space Venus-like, and more.

The second part of the collection focuses on the concept of being “within reach” in another sense - here, the artist exposes some of his personal moments, feelings, and anecdotes without censorship, in a sense it’s the artist’s diary through his daily life. The artworks are created in a free-flowing process, without hyper-perfectionism. We see the sketched character go through various everyday life scenes - enjoying the flight with a cheeky glass of wine, aimlessly scrolling on his phone or driving through the city. These sculptures find their realisation freely, with lightness and humour.

Mark Sun Roz says: “I am very happy to have an exhibition at M/Gallery and showcase my new works. My style and the techniques I use continue to evolve. Sometimes I lose understanding of how they change and where they are going, so collecting the works and putting them on display as they are now is useful for me, and interesting for those who follow my development.

The exhibition features bas-reliefs, where I play with composition and use whole characters, unlike only parts of them, as I’ve done in the past. In addition to that, I present new works, which are fragments of my visual diary. The stories in them are personal but at the same time familiar to many. I noticed that in my practice I simultaneously develop several formats of my art; together, they make up a more complete picture of the world through my eyes. I make it so that I can use the right format when I need it, so that this possibility is always within reach.”

Mark Sun Roz (1994) graduated from the Latvian Academy of Arts, Department of Sculpture, Bachelor’s (2019) study program. He received the “Brederlo - von Sengbusch” German award for Best Sculpture in 2019. Since 2017, he has had several solo exhibitions in Latvia. His works are in the private collections in Zuzeum contemporary art centre, in Latvia and the USA.
